Thermoelectric materials are commonly used for harvesting thermal heat and to convert it into electricity. The most efficient thermoelectric materials are opaque and in the bulk form. For certain applications, such as windowpanes, tactile displays, photovoltaic panels, to render these structures and devices more energetically sustainable, it is desired that the thermoelectric materials be optically transparent in the visible spectrum, and able to be applied as a coating. Metal-oxide thin films, when conveniently doped, have prospects to become efficient thermoelectric materials. In this talk, the thermoelectric properties of doped zinc oxide and doped titanium dioxide thin films deposited on glass by physical vapour deposition are presented. Additionally, the local atomic structure is discussed from Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) experiments.
